Unit 116 Photographic Materials, Techniques & Technology - Final Outcomes

Intro: In this unit I will be able to extend my knowledge of photographic materials, techniques and technologies through considering the respective characteristics and applications of silver-based and digital media. I may identify the potential applications for photographic media and reflect on the merits of different formats as used in industry and creative practice. Knowledge gained may be applied to the selection and gauge its effectiveness in allowing me to complete this unit.

Light & Shade

The large majority of these photographs are the industrial area in Liverpool near the Titanic. I went down there mid day when the sun was at it highest luckily there was not that many clouds as well as good weather. I found it difficult at the start of this shoot to achieve any good outcomes and the area of words so fast and I am normally better with digital cameras rather than film camera because the army to photograph long distance and in this environment where a lot of the areas restricted definitely could've came in handy however I believe I have made use of what I had with me.   The V shapes formed by the clouds and the crane with the central light giving a strong outline of the crane's silhouette and the eye follows the slope of the roof rail. I waited until the sun was a little bit above the train then I meted onto the song greeting silhouettes from the roof of the building and the crane. Luckily I meted correctly so I did not have to do any burning in the darkroom for this image

This image was taken in the same area as the previous image however this is a photograph of a bridge that was silhouetted out to create a darker moodier atmosphere to the image. This image was a little bit tricky to take because of how busy the bridge was so I had to wait for there to be no cars So that there was no weird outlining of a car. I did the same thing again by metering on the sun. Another strong silhouette reflecting the strength of the industrial structure at the docks, the strong bold clean lines.

This image is taken from the Titanic hotel next two All the ventilation. This is probably my second favourite image out of this series because of how defined the shadows are and how the dark greeny film adds to the atmosphere of the image. If I was to take this image again I would of probably taking it from a different angle probably aware towards the ground just to have a little bit more uniqueness to my image. The bold stone pillars, and safety rail cast shadows on the paving slabs in the afternoon sunshine

This image at Liverpool Docks shows how fragile the building can first appear and then it appears to  creep across the photo like an industrial insect on the move. The strong light and minimal cloud give a good contrast between the buildings and background.

This image is an industrial chimney that was probably in use in the 1980s however it is now abandoned and neglected. I like how I managed to capture the light on the different sections of the chimney and create is sort of a contrast from white to create to black. Sadly whilst I was printing there must have been smudges on the film or on the land that I've created white splodges on to the image. If I could take this image again I would have waited until there were clouds directly above the chimney making it look like it was still active

This image is a warehouse which I have attempted Silhouettes The building however it did not go to plan . I believe it would have worked better if I positioned myself so that the sun was behind the building so that it can produce beams of light coming from behind the building it also may have worked well. I have waited for some clouds to position themselves on the left-hand side to just make it more interesting instead of a blank area. This is definitely one of my least favorite image of the bunch However I do like the simplicity of the image and how The building looks like it's about to topple over you.

The Power Of Colour

Colour is everywhere. We are surrounded by it therefore we tend to take it for granted and forget how impactful it is. I was trying to think of ideas for power of colour I thought all Purple fields of lavender however as there are no fields like that in my area I then had to change my ideas. so I got the idea of using smoke bombs. I bought please from Amazon however there was a few difficulties when buying them. This was due to the fact that they advertise buying a whole set of smoke bombs in different colours but instead I just got free smoke bombs in the same colour . I decided to continue with my plans and shoot all of these at Formby beach Where there was abandoned buildings buried underneath the sand. I fought this could add to the atmosphere of my image and give it a more rebellious feel. This was also my first time shooting with smoke bombs so I found it to be a little tricky to get the smoke in the right position with the model However I believe I created some great final outcomes.

In these images are used a red smoke bomb to portray the power of colour in this task. This image is my favourite 1 to 3 seconds because of how vibrant colours are and how expressive the image shows giving it a more rebellious feel to it. I also like how the smoke covers half of the model's face up As well as how thick and dense the fog is in certain areas and in other parts less so giving it more movement in the image. I also took this image from a lower angle rather than an A face to face shot. Also in this image because it was a cloudy day with not much right I use a reflector to bounce back some of the light on the right hand side of the model.

For this image, I asked my model to move the smoke one in a circular motion to try and even out the smoke to join and to cover the majority of his face. I believe that this worked successfully And created a circle of smoke around him. I In this image you might've know I have Used to like me to edit this image by changing the levels are adding a filter to this I believe this adds extra punch to the image and brings out the colours.

In this image I did pretty much the same as the second image but took it at the start of the models rotation as well taking it from a more direct ankle rather than from the side. I do like the addition of a space between the smoke so that it doesn't create a complete circle . I wish I could of had the model stare directly at the camera whilst doing this.

For this image I decided to try and recreate the image I was inspired by however or did not go to plan. Because of the wind direction the smoke did not trade downwards making it look like the model was submerged in smoke and to the model could not stay under the smoke for a long period of time because of health and safety reasons even though he did have a mask goggles to protect him. How ever I do believe that this is a great example of power of colour just from the unique idea of usage of colour.

Dusk til Dawn

Dust till dawn was another tricky task to do. I struggled with finding ideas to related to the subject such as sunsets, speedlights  and using flares and sparklers at night however none of these did not succeed. So I came up with the idea of trying to invoke an motion of what people feel like after a days work after a busy day's work and returning home through a bus or walking down dark alleyways.

I took this image in Southport during a time where people were making their way home after a long days work. I did this because I wanted to reflect the dark synthetic lighting with a dreary and tired subject. Also people pay less attention to you when all they want to do is go home and have the dinner allowing me to get better images . This one is of a man walking past a chippy. As you can see I deliberately photographed him Walking past the neon sign to get half of him is it by a red light and half of him cast into darkness. I also like how I have included the giant ice cream above his head that just gives it a bit more quirkiness to the image. If I was to take this image again I would all use my Canon camera instead of a icon because I am more familiar with the controls.

This one was also taken in Southport. I took this across the road from the chippy giving me a wider angle and a full shot shot of the shop. I deliberately waited for someone to walk by so I could create a silhouette bringing more drama two wards the image I also like how I edited this image making the lights slightly harsh towards the eyes I did this because of the neon can say Cury off the lights should invoke the audience to not like them instead of a calming soothing fighting that is reserved for say a sunset.

This image is taken by one of those slot machine places. Deliberately took this image there because the machine is a fake and natural yellow orangey glow off into the dark. All I had to do is wait for a person to pacify. Fortunately someone did pass by however they were a skateboard which I believe benefits photograph even more than someone just walking by because it gives the image extra movement in it . I would've liked to all taken the image of little sooner so that the skateboarder will is centralised in the image.

This image was taken in alley way with a single light I believe that the light will get dinner or was malfunctioning giving that Orangey glow. I took this image because I wanted to Not have all of my images with just people in them. In this image I think like how the orange light does not write off the whole alleyway instead liked up each into virtual brick giving the image more detail and texture. However, I could have done using a different man with a wider aperture to get more light and a better finish this image.
