Unit 1 visual communication and unit 2 idea generation.

Introduction

Live Brief - Ilford Photography Competition 'Lyrically Speaking"

Introduction: For this unit I hope to achieve a greater under standing of artists who create album covers and to make my own album covers. I will be using film to achieve these out come and a variety of dark room techniques. For my style of work i will be focusing on landscape and architecture.

I have chosen two historical examples "David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders Mars 1972" and "The Beatles Abbey Road 1969"

This album was released on 16 June 1972. It was photography by Brian Ward. Who has photograph David Bowie multiple time during his career. Some people say it was because of this image and David Bowie poetry of the character of Ziggy Stardust that catapulted them to fame.   What strikes me first is the use of colour in this image. Straight away the colours stand out, drawing the audience into the image. The use of the warm yellow lighting, lights up the streets as well as David Bowie in a blueish greenish clothing and his purple boots. I admire how much detail the photographer has put into this image. With each corner having something to express, whether it's the depressing weather or the flickering lights in the windows.

Abbey Road was released on 26 September 1969 and includes George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and John Lennon. In this image there is a rumour that the clothes are supposed to match and are what people would were for a funeral. The man on the left is the person who buries the dead. The second man it is his funeral, because he is not wearing any shoes. The third man in black is the person in morning and the last one at the end is supposed to be the priest all in white. However this is just a rumour, but never the less I do like how this is left up for interpretation and gives the audience something to think about. I like how in this image everything has been done on purpose from the way they walk, to how they are dressed, the lighting, the depth of field to how minimal the photo is.  I think that it is important for up and coming photographers, that some times less is more and you don't always need to have really abstract images or controversial photos to be noticed. Sometimes it can be just photographing people walking across the street.

Idea developmet: My ideas for this project is to go down to Liverpools industrial area photography the building, the docks and people work there. hopefully I can make use out of natural lighting to create a softer warm tone to the image.

Materials Techniques Process

Burning is when the image receives more exposure so the image can darken. To avoid a very obvious change between the burned-in area and the rest of the image, the device must stay in motion. Burning is a longer process because it needs a longer exposure and time to change the image.

Elton John - Candle in the wind "Like a candle in the wind

Water Fire & Air was the theme I had in mind for the Album cover ...when trying to capture these images on "Formby Beach" .... I wanted to capture the flame without it being extinguished the wild air circulating in the jar enough to keep the flame alive .. and the lapping of the wash against the glass jar stuck in the sand on the shoreline. I really what to achieve a sense of raw natural state ...with the candle in a glass jar etc...To improve on the shoot I would be looking for a stronger/brighter natural light, a cleaner jar which would make the outline more defined and more movement in the wash ....

With this shoot covering  the  "Beatles Album" on the retro record player, I was trying to achieve a contrast between light and dark and the natural background of the Pinewoods to show the differences of the two worlds of nature and the woods against the retro pop theme,  whilst pushing to reflect the stark contrast of the dark shadow lines caused by the pine trees streaming through the woods highlighting the retro record player.
